Get to know the real Coco La'Bri.

When entering a new circle of friends you tend to come across inside jokes you don’t understand, or overhear tales of people you have yet to meet. In LA if you enter the elite hipster community and you don’t know who Cory Kennedy is, I’m almost certain that you’re pretty much banished from Downtown Los Angles; in New York City if you don’t know The Misshapes, you probably still haven’t heard of this thing called the “Internet” and you still think skinny jeans are for girls. Apparently, if you’re anyone who matters in the SF night scene, you must KNOW and believe, in the entity that is Coco La’Bri! I found myself in an embarrassing predicament New Years Eve when standing outside a Club with my new found “friends” the Missingtoof DJs. In a crowd of seven or eight with our cell phones in hand, frantically scrolling down our contact list, desperately searching for an After Party to crash and well, a place to get out of the cold! DJ Disaster turns to me and says “What about Coco?” I replied, clueless, “Pardon Me?” He restates the questions in a half drunken slur “Call Coco!” To which I then made the ultimate common nobody mistake! I uttered, “Who’s Coco?” Ok. Imagine this: seven people in totally different conversations, in all sorts of tones and noises, simultaneously coming to a screeching halt and turning to face you with a death stare. It wasn’t pretty! Out of the shadows DJ Basura steps out and mutters “You don’t know who Coco is?” DJ Disaster adds “Coco…La’Bri…” as if I would snap out of it, like I was going to say “Oh that coco! I thought you were talking about another Coco!!!” I heard someone whisper “is he fucking serious?” Someone else contributed by asking me “Are you even from around here? Do you even live here?” Long story short, I fled the scene and did not make it to the After Party! I dashed!
One Month later minding my own business and dancing on an elevated speaker at a popular nightclub, I notice that the crowed started to part like the ancient red sea. I noticed that people would stop and stare! People started taking frantic pictures, one bright flash after the other! I wondered “Who’s here?” and all I saw was the perfectly sculptured platinum blond hair of what seemed to be a living and breathing Barbie Doll. I knew in an instance, like a religious awakening, without any ratification from anyone that I had just come across the supreme goddess that is Coco La’Bri!
Coco “Chloe Lomeli” La’Bri (22) is a socialite like no other. Originally from LA, Coco moved to San Francisco a couple years back, when asked "why?", she remarks, "BECAUSE I LOVE SAN FRANCISCO!" Coco has been featured in numerous fashions shows (including “shrinkle” a harajuku inspired brand) and is a staple in the downtown, uptown, all around SF scene. She has crossed the title of fashion model to fashion designer, and is often seen sporting her own goods. So if you like something she’s wearing, you’re probably admiring her designs.

Here is my interview with the lovely Coco; we talked about Boys, Fashion, her career and most of all the future…

SC: CoCo, you have an amazing, and unique senses of style! Where do you get your inspiration? What looks do you most often try to emulate?
COCO: I get my inspiration from varies things. I usually look through fashion magazines or art books. Anything really; neon-colors, music, pop-art, Paris, New York , Milan, Tokyo street-style!....basically simple things that pop into my little head for creative ideas!

SC: Have you always liked fashion? How much has your style changed over the years?
CoCo: I have been into fashion since I was a baby! I used to make little outfits for my Barbie Dolls and make them do a catwalk! I was always pretending to be a fashion model/designer even when I was only four years old. I always had an obsession with fashion...my style has changed and keeps changing over the years. I'm such a chameleon!

SC: Are there any Celebrity Fashion Icons that you look up to for inspiration?
Coco: I can definitely say I admire Gwen Stefani…I think it's obvious that I like her, and can consider her one of my Role Models....I mean, just look at her she is so fucking hot! She is an amazing fashion-icon!

SC: Where do you usually shop for your attire?
Coco: I shop everywhere! Anywhere I can find cute clothes I'm there! haha Seriously, I'm all over the place. I love cute little shops where u can find articles no one else has. Vintage stores are awesome places to! Big labels are great but unknown labels are just as beautiful. It’s about the quality!

SC:Who are your favorite designers?
Coco: My favorite designers are the more colorful crazy eccentric ones! I love Heatherette, Christian Dior [John Galliano], Dolce&Gabbana, Jeremy Scott, Betsey Johnson, Alexander McQueen, and the always amazing Coco Chanel!

SC: How much preparation goes into your spectacular ensembles?
Coco: I usually just put outfits together that day hahah. I rarely plan my outfits not unless it's for a special event but usually I just wear whatever my body feels like that day!

SC: Do you ever feel pressure to outdo your last outfit from the night before? Do you feel an unspoken expectation from fans to look outrageous?
Coco: Um, I know that people will certainly not expect me to wear a t-shirt or jeans the next time they see me. But I wouldn’t want to do that. I love dressing up! I always try to look cute. haha

SC: I know you enjoy making clothing and designing, can we expect to be able to purchase your clothing somewhere soon?
Coco: I would like to open an online store where people can purchase my designs; Other than just being able to buy them at my shows.

SC: I’m dying to know! “What Does Coco La'Bri look like when she’s casually relaxing at home?” For some reason I still imagine you in full make up! Does the makeup come off?
Coco: haha that’s such a silly question. It’s so funny. I actually don't wear any make-up when I’m at home relaxing! It feels awesome!!! I love not having to wear it when I don't have to. I sometimes get so lazy to have to put it on....I can be very normal you know…yeah right! haha

SC: Every time I’ve seen you you’re dancing on tables, pianos, or speakers, if not on stage! You’re a big party girl, or at least you appear to be! Am I correct or is it a misconception? Are you secretly a homebody?
Coco: No. that’s me. I am definitely a wildchild! There is no doubt that I like to have fun and enjoy myself no matter where I'm at...and I don't care who is watching! But relaxing at home is sweet to…

SC: What other misconceptions do you think people might have about you? In your opinion, what’s one thing people realize about you, when they get to know you; that they didn’t assume before?
Coco: I do feel that a lot of people judge me by the way I look. Especially, those that don't know that much about me… My friends know that I’m genuinely a really nice person. People find that out once they get to know me. I try hard not to give the wrong impression to people....I don't want to be known as some bitch, or a ''bad'' person. That would be a personal disappointment.

SC: I must admit that your Fabulous and OVER THE TOP Persona is very intimidating! You just have a larger-than-life quality! Do you ever feel unapproachable? Do you think maybe sometimes people don’t approach you because of your outrageousness?
Coco: Yes! ALL THE TIME!!! I hate it when I smile at someone and you can tell they want to smile back but they don't because they are too scared! hahah Sometimes I feel like I can be too outrageous for certain people to handle...but they are the ones missing out! Haha

SC: Do you find it hard to separate the people who want to be your real friends, from those who just desire to be seen as a “friend” of Coco La'Bri?
Coco: No. not at all…I know who my real friends are. Because they know me underneath all the superficial stuff and still like me. They aren’t materialistic or vain. The people I trust don’t care to be seen with me at some party or at a club...I have their unconditional respect.

SC: From the look on your MySpace you have hundreds of men at your feet! Do you get hounded by men everywhere you go? Who’s the craziest guy that’s ever picked up on you?
Coco: I always seem to attract the weirdest guys! I don't know what's up with me but lately I've been getting some funky-lookin junkies! Everywhere I go! hahaha! But seriously, I had some guy follow me to my car once when I was leaving a party and I was like ''Omg! Everyone hurry get in the car!'' I didn’t know what he wanted from me? Actually I don’t want to know… (I think he was drunk.) But yea weird guys, I tell ya!

SC: That sounds scary. Haha So Is there anybody special in your life right now? Or are you looking for Mr. Right? If so, what do you look for?
Coco: haha NO! There is no one special in my life right now. I think it's really hard to find someone these days that fits you’re exact match, but who is MR. RIGHT ANYWAYS???
I don't know him...but I think when the time is right I will meet him. At this moment I’m just focused on my future goals…career wise. But I’m keeping my eyes open! Just incase.

SC: What has been the pinnacle of your personal success so far?
Coco: My biggest success was probably changing as a person! I used to care a lot about what people thought about me. Too much! I was secretly very insecure; I would pretend not to be when I really was. I have changed that completely! I’m much more comfortable with myself.

SC:Do you want to always live the crazy and glamorous life, or would you like to eventually settle down and be the mom and wife?
Coco: I would like to ALWAYS live the glamorous life! But that’s silly! The crazy life is just for fun right now in my youth. Eventually, I'll settle down. I want to adopt kids when I'm in my 40's and enjoy a nice life. No desperate housewife here! However, in the meantime I'll enjoy being young and full of life while I still can! Fuck it!

SC: What’s next for Coco La'Bri? Any big plans?
Coco: I'm planning on taking a trip to Tokyo this year to check out the lifestyle there! That places inspires me so much! I just have to be apart of it!!! I'm also working on some projects for this summer…including, having a fashion show! It’s very exciting!

"I'm such a chameleon!"

During my whole process of creating this article I kept talking with Coco in a series of emails for inspiration. In one of our last conversations I wrote her “I’m thinking about calling this article Magic’s in the make-up, like that old song from No Doubt!” In my mind I was doing a play on words, not even thinking about the deeper meaning of the Song. She replied to me by saying something much unexpected, “I love that song!!! It’s my absolute favorite! I can really relate to it! You read my mind…it describes me perfectly.”

I’d like to leave you with some of the lyrics; maybe they will help you get a more introspective look at Coco La’Bri, an intimate look beyond the Make-Up.

Magics In The Makeup(G.Stefani,T. Dumont)
Can you tell I’m faking it?
But I want to be myself.
A counterfeit disposition couldn’t be good for my health…
…I can fool you and attract attention;
I camouflage my nature.
Let me demonstrate…
Makeup’s all off,
Who am I?
If the magic’s in the makeup,
Then who am I?
I want to be the real thing.
Who am I?
